THE ARTIST’S TECHNIQUE-

The artist reverse-paints on 2 Acrilyte cell-cast panels which are then mounted sealing the paintings insides. A 1/2" space remains in between allowing ambient light to pass through the transparent and transluscent paint and cast ever changing shadows and reflections on the wall.

The final works, once sealed are about 1" thick are supported 1" from the wall.

The art-installation, "Red" was in situ at the nature preserve of parque san Buenaventura, Panajachel, Guatemala, for the weekend of the Dia de los Muertos, 2003. It commemorated the 35-year struggle in which so many indigenous Mayans died.

Traditionally during the holiday children fly kites to show lost souls the way to heaven;Jorinde used this as her starting point to make painted silk hangings;while I let the spilt blood be my organizing thought for the hundreds of red squares lain ungridded on the earth.

The piece was documented by VirtualGuatemala.
